Connoisseur Art Gallery proudly presents "A Lady's Soliloquy", the third solo exhibition in Hong Kong of the highly esteemed female contemporary Chinese artist JIA Juan Li. After the two sold-out solo exhibitions in the past two years, this September, "A Lady's Soliloquy" will feature about 20 much anticipated new works from the Paris-based artist who enjoys tremendous international acclaim.
JIA's works represent a harmonious fusion of Chinese culture with western oil painting technique. Her experience of once living in the proximity of the Forbidden City leads her into a dreamy world of imagination from which springs a source of inspiration for her art. Fascinated by the splendor of Qing Dynasty court life, JIA creates compelling portraitures of Qing noble ladies with beautiful yet pensive faces, capturing the elegance of a bygone era. Inspired by the delicate artifacts and architecture of the Imperial Palace, JIA depicts atmospheric scenes of daily life at court, highlighting the decorative aspects of the Palace with her brushstrokes. The court ladies under JIA's paintbrush are mysterious, distant and still; the audience is allowed only a glimpse into their lives.
The more symbolic and transcendental garden scenes present the audience with fairy tales left untold. Dancing and floating in a paradise, the garden fairies and flowers dissolve into a lyrical mist with JIA's palette, expressing the artist's feminine sensitivity and otherworldly sentiments, as well as her love for nature and freedom.
JIA was born in Hangzhou, China in 1960. After receiving her BFA (1986) from the renowned Sichuan Academy of Fine Art and her MFA with first class honour (1991) from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts, in 1996 she was awarded a two-year full scholarship from the French Government to study at the Ecole d?rt d?ix-en-Provence. Now based in Paris, France, JIA holds exhibitions internationally, and is a member of the La Maison des Artistes en France (Artists Association of France) and the Chinese Artists Association. Her works are collected by major museums and auctioned at Christie's as well as China Guardian Auction since the mid 1990s. In June 2004, JIA received the Prix de L'uteurs dans les Arts Graphiques et Plastiques from the Prix International d'art Contemporain de Monte-Carlo (International Competition of Contemporary Art at Monte Carlo), one of the most respected honours of the international art scene.
