ZHANG Da Zhong

Zhang Da Zhong was born in Guangzhou, China in 1953 and loved to draw and paint as a child. He came from a humble family background and did not have art lessons or books, radio or television, but from young he drew and sketched a range of subject matter from airplanes and tanks to animals and characters from Chinese novels. As a teenager during the Cultural Revolution, he had the experience of learning from professional artists who mentored him as he honed his painting skills and built his foundation on painting propaganda posters. After the Cultural Revolution, he obtained a Master of Fine Art from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art, taught art and became a full-time professional artist. His work is collected by the National Olympic Committee in China. Zhang was the first artist to portray the Red Guards as a subject matter and this was the series that has gained him international recognition and collectorship from around the world.
