JIA Juan Li

Jia Juan Li is one of the most outstanding Chinese female artists from her generation. Born in Hangzhou, China in 1960, she was brought up in a large family where art and culture were highly valued and she was encouraged to pursue her interest in art. She first graduated from the highly selective Sichuan Fine Arts Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Oil Painting with a First Class Honour from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1991. In 1996 she was awarded a full two-year scholarship by the French government to study at the École d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence and in the years that followed, went on to receive numerous accolades in the international art world including an award presented by the Prince Souverain and Princess of Hanover for the International Competition of Contemporary Art in Monte Carlo in 2004. In 2011, Jia held a major retrospective in China at Today Art Museum in Beijing followed by another important show at the Guiyang Art Museum in Guizhou in 2012. In the same year, Jia was awarded the "Médaille d’Or Peinture Figurative", the gold prize for figurative painting in the annual "Exhibition of Société Nationale des Beaux Arts" at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In 2013, she was among 40 French and Chinese artists chosen for an exhibition titled “CHIFRA”, held under the patronage of Mr. François Hollande on the Champs Elysees in Paris during the French International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC) period, to mark the 50th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations. The touring exhibition was brought to the National Museum of Arts in Beijing, Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen and Chongqing Art Museum in 2014.

The special, everlasting quality of Jia’s work is in her unique style. Having lived in France for more than a decade, she has developed her own style of combining the western oil painting technique with a strong Chinese element. Her paintings are inspired by countless visits to the Forbidden City in Beijing, bedtime stories her mother used to tell her as a child, Chinese classical novels, murals of the Dunhuang caves, and even fairytales by Hans Andersen. By fusing the contemporary with the classic and the real with the imaginary, Jia recreates Chinese history and culture in the most memorable way, and her paintings are beautifully rendered in a mesmerizing and captivating style.
